Transform my home using GTD concepts
Just getting into it... 21 months ago

I just recently discovered the GTD “way” and so far, so good. I’m an architect/mom who works from a home office and so much has felt so out of control the last few years. I’m actually starting to tame the beast with just collecting stuff into a general inbox area (I think that to date, my whole house has been an “inbox” of things left around to do—a cutting board to be resurfaced, magazines to read, files to be sorted out!).

This process has also really helped me define my priorities. My daughter is almost 3 and it’s taken me this long to realize how intense it is to be a mom and that it’s become a higher priority than being an architect (which is something I’ve worked years to do). I’m in the process of setting up my practice so that I work fewer hours, but on more satisfying work in order to have the time to live my life with her and keep my house running in some semblance of order. I already feel myself getting happier about the choices and finding that it’s easier to chose what to do next.

I know how you feel!

Your story sounds like mine. My youngest just turned 4, and I feel like its just been in the past year that I can actually start moving towards getting bigger jobs done, as opposed to surviving day to day.

Good luck with the change in hours. I did that last year so I could get home earlier and have longer evenings. It has made such a remarkable difference.

Thanks for the note!

It’s so good to hear from someone in the same boat. Around here, I’m tackling a bunch of piles of paper and stuff that’s been lying around for way too long. I don’t feel nearly as overwhelmed with everything I’ve felt like I need to do. It really does help to get it out of your head and into a system.

I’ve even applied the “inbox” concept to the kitchen: I now put everything to go into the dishwasher or back in the fridge in their own locations. Keeps the visual clutter down!

Have you found any cool tricks around the house?

Well this week

I feel hardly qualified to give advice! I am so close to the edge with housework that all it takes is one extra stress and everything falls apart.

I do try to have an inbox for every room. In the kitchen it’s the sink (since I always have more dishes while the dishwasher is running). Each kids room has bins that the toys can be thrown into…and so on.

I also find that it really helps me to move clockwise around every room, setting a timer and racing myself and really thinking in terms of having a cleaning momentum. For example, no matter how messy the kitchen is, I can get it entirely clean in 30 minutes, provided I have 30 minutes uninterrupted. But if my momentum gets interrupted, it will take all day and still not get done.

I don’t know, I guess the most useful tip I have is to know when to cook the easy dinners, and always keep the table cleared and a box of crayons nearby.
