be section/co-section leader in marching band (read all 3 entries…)
Clarient Captain 21 months ago

I’m a freshman in high school and we completed our marching band season (my first ever) in late october. I think I did pretty well for my first season and a few people are encouraging me to try out for clarinet captain for the next season. What I lack is self confidence. There is a junior in my section but I feel I’ll be able to handle the position. Any advice on how to boost my self confidence? What makes a good captain? Thanks.

Comments:

Check out The Matrix: “Don’t think you can, know you can”. First, know what the captain needs to know. Ask the previous captain, if available, for advice. Second, nobody’s perfect. You don’t have to be perfect either, everybody learns by doing. Third, listen to advice, but make your own decisions. People respect a captain who is honest, fair, can make their own decisions, and puts the team over themselves. People who are captains are not in it for glory or popularity. They do it because they care and they believe in the best interest of the group. Know why you are doing it, and confidence will come.
