Re-learn the math I forgot from school, and learn how to do math I never learned in the past (read all 11 entries…)
I see the mountian, but not the path. 21 months ago

So here is my problem.
For another project I think, I need to understand this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_product

particularly the bits with the matrix stuff.
My ex, “helped” me with my photopuppet rig using this type of maths. He solved some rotation/orientation problems in a moment. Things that had taken me months to get no where.

I was impressed, and since then have held a respect and love of mathematics. Unfortunately, he also was not terribly nice to me, and would not tell me what I needed to know in order to understand the building of transform and rotation matrices.

Here is a little bit where I am coming from also.
I was “home-schooled” through out my entire youth. I am no stranger to the life long quest of learning. But I am stuck on this problem. I am not afraid of the time I need to commit to learn. Months, years, whatever. Even if the outcome is of negligible use. I am ready. I just do not know where to start.

I am going to pick back up my math studies again soon. Probably in the late spring, and hope to completely my algebra lessons by mid summer:)

But after that, what comes next? Is it Trig? Is it Calc? Physics? What is the next step towards my goal of learning math?
I don’t know. And I’m in the unfamiliar position of not even knowing who to ask!

Math is great way to succeed

This would be a good order of your math studies in all

Pre-Algebra-Algebra-Geometry-Algerbra2-Precalculus(Trigonometry)-Calculus-Calculus 2

:)

Thanks!

You have no idea how valuable that information is!!
I’ve literally been asking that question about the order of how to learn math for about two years now, and yours is the first straight answer!

Game on!

Thanks,

mathematics

has several fields, and really – you can choose the ones that interest you most! Mechanics, statistics, geometry; pure or applied… :)

Have fun!

Specialize!

yes, I agree that at some point I will need to specialize. First I just need to grasp the basics.
It’s crazy how long it takes to first admit ignorence and then get over the shame of it. Maybe it’s just age that mellows a person out.

Do you have a perticular area of mathimatics that you specialize in or love?
I’ve heard once a teacher explain that math was just another language…I want to learn this language to learn and talk about the world around me!

statistics degree

And proving the theory that 4 years of intensive studying really puts you off a subject!

I prefer applied to pure. Algebra I actually find ‘fun’; calculus is like a bizarre little set of rule/tricks and I didn’t like the more advanced stuff. I say I went off statistics, but I do still like data analysis – the more practical side (which is just as well, as it’s what I do!).

I’m probably too far at the other end to remember where you are, really. My head is too full of Mortality Studies, Stochastic Processes, and other such horrors! ;) But I totally agree on the language aspect – good luck with the basics, and if you have any other questions do feel free to shout!

Anthony Santoro has gotten 1 cheer on this entry.
