major in history
"excellent degree" 21 months ago

I majored in History at Utah State and have no regrets. History teaches causality, or why things are the way they are. Unlike what the 1970s bumper sticker says, shit doesn’t just happen. History actually tells you why shit happens (and keeps happening).

With my history degree I’ve…

1. Taught English in Taiwan & Korea (twice).
2. Worked in southern Idaho as a contract archaeologist.
3. Joined the Marine Corps Reserve and “played” in Iraq.
4. Worked as a librarian at the General Accounting Office in DC.
5. Worked at Waldenbooks in Concord, CA.
6. Taught middle school in south Los Angeles (big shout out to the kids at Bethune MS on 69th & Broadway).

Although you can’t really expect to work in the “history” field, you can still do a lot of cool stuff with the degree.

I keep..

.. arguing with people about ‘causality’. They still seem to want to argue current events with me. They ask me how past events have ANY bearing on what is happening today. I tell them, “read history, dumbass”.

"true that"

I know what you mean. People walk around think “shit happens” is a way of life. It they’d start asking themselves “why shit happens”, the world would be a better place.

Nothing happens in a vacuum. There’s a reason for everything - we may not like the reason - but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t still look for it.
