this may seem like a really small, insignificant goal to some people, but, at 32 years old, i STILL don’t know what i want to be when i grow up! i’m almost finished with an associate in arts—now i just need a career focus to earn my BA or BS in, well, something! I have changed majors more times than i can count: from education to library and information science to nursing to english literature to, well, you get the picture. i prefer the humanities, and right now my major is in sociology with a minor in psychology, however, i just don’t see myself in that career field. i’m not interested in working with people on such a deep level, nor am i interested in grad school at this point (after 10 years trying to earn a bachelors degree!) i’ve tried career counseling, but i consciously skew the results in favor of whatever my current major is (even though i try not to!) long story short, i have no direction. i’m the perpetual student. what to do….

Oh my goodness . . .
are you my sister from another mother? We must be twins?! I too am 32 and have been going back and forth and have also been to more colleges than anyone can shake a stick at! I am currently paying for a career counselor and though I was a even now am still a bit suspect of the process, and worried that I just got suckered into some new-agey stuff . . . I have also realized that I really might be more excited to go to work daily if I found work at a Non-Profit w/in the areas of women’s rights, poverty/homelessness, and youth/education. I never would have figured that out on my own. I never even thought about Non-Profits at all. A concern when we pinpointed this as an area of interest was the money. But depending on the budget for the organization, in the positions that I am interested in I can make more than I am now which will allow me to live. You know?
Anyway, recently I have also felt that I want to pursue my cosmetology license for makeup artistry from Aveda. I have always wanted to do this. It seems like as soon as I find some focus, I go and find something else to do.
Anyway, doing this online program at UMUC I feel that w/ my life credits from work will allow me to take some time out of how long I will need to be in school. Pray for me. I just have to finish this already.
My new motto is” Get off your duff…your WHOLE LIFE depends on it!” Pretty intense, right? But when I think of it . . . it gets me going.
All the best to you . . . and hey, you are not alone out there in wondering what you want to do when you grow up. I am right there with you.
Keep me posted…..

Hey Sister!
You’re right! We could be identical twins! :p
I’ve already done cosmetology school! (I’m not shi!$$ing you! Found out I couldn’t stand the wash, rinse, repeat cycle-metaphorically speaking-client after client, all day long. “Hey, how about the nice weather we’ve been having! How’s so and so doing? Really, your tomato plants are doing that well!!” I could have shot myself in the head!
It’s interesting that you mention being “suckered into new-agey stuff.” Once upon a time, I read Tarot cards for a living. (That’s just between you, me, and however many hundreds of people stop by and read this message. k? lol.) By any chance, are you an Aquarian? I’d really like to find out exactly how closely we are related! :p We seem to be so identical in nature! lol.
Anyway, good luck in the future. I’ll cross my fingers, legs, toes, and eyes for you! ;-)

Sis....
I am a Leo, a woman of the sun, a Leo-ness [lioness]!! How nuts would it have been if I too was an Aquarian! It would have given more credence to the whole idea of astrology, which I do believe to a certain extent.
Tarot cards too?! Wow . . . you will have to tell me your secrets via another means. hee hee hee. I won’t go to those readers at all. The last thing I need is for them to tell me I am going to die some crazy tragic death in 2 months.
Thanks for sacrificing your comfort for my good. You can uncross your eyes though . .. that can cause major strain, and the last thing we need are stronger eyeglass prescriptions!
Cheers . . . Later chica!
