2008/3/30 birdie99 heard that att.com will dump 65,000 pay phones.

i dont know about you but the pay phone is something i hate to see go. i remember when calls were one quarter. before that i am told they were as cheap as a dime. in this day and age of speedpass rfid gadgets, i wonder if kids even know what pocket change is.

i remember my penny bank and i remember saving them up in rolls to carry to the bank.

i remember trips with my mom to the safe deposit box.

i remember trips with my dad to the camera shop.

i remember trips on saturdays to the local movie theatre. they had a pay phone there. all us kids used it to call for a ride. of course, most of the time, our moms showed up on time unbidden when the show was over.

i remember taking my child to day care and to school and during the summer vacation,
to the ridglea pool assn.

i remember when my parents seriously considered placing a shelter in our back yard. it was during the missile crisis.

i remember when all the parents were supposed to pick up each others kids at school.
we had this drill because ft worth was hometown to the bomber plant. pierre van paassen refers to them as bombing planes. rockets and missiles were elsewhere. but we had carswell afb and con vair or general dynamics and were considered prime targets.

this is about all i recall about the cold war. sputnik caused educators to fly into a flurry of activity. boys did, i think, receive a lot of attention as possible pilots and rocket scientists and astronomers. we girls took
home economics and languages.
