A question about this goal: Has anyone tried courses at the Goethe Institute? 7 months ago

Answers:

I attended three years of classes at the Goethe Institut in DC. I started at a mid-level because I had several years in high school and college. I would recommend the classes to you. The books they select and the teachers are a good combination. There seems to be something for every level of proficiency.

I found the teachers to be very good, but as with any school they had their strengths and their weaknesses. The teacher I had for the first two courses was very good about correcting grammar and making sure everyone in the room spoke during class, but she was very formal. Another teacher thought up very creative learning exercises, but he also made us sing in class – with hand motions. A third was very young, so he was very energetic and fun, but not so keen on correcting poor grammar. All in all, I would say I learned more with each class, which was the reason I was taking the courses.

I also met an interesting group of people outside of my profession, which I value very highly. In DC, my fellow students were a mix of graduate students, professionals, foreign nationals, retired, or young. The reasons for taking the courses were also varied – school credit, to meet people, choral groups, to take proficiency tests or married to German speakers.
I say go for it.

All do I have not tried the Goethe Institute, I hear it is very adaptable to your needs and schedules, thats its a good school, aldo a bit expensive, but hopefully you get results…

No, sorry; I haven’t. Just 4 years in high school and a couple in college. But sounds like a worthwhile place to learn.

I have not taken courses with the Goethe Institut, but am certified as a Business German speaker through them (ZD-MP). The companies that I have worked with (Daimler, Stihl, small consulting firms) have always accepted and been impressed with this cert. You may want to consider taking a cert with your classes, depending on what you want to use your German for. Good luck!
