Tenth Annivesary of the Vagina Monologues Saturday April 19, 2008 7 months ago

“Bra Ball”

I have seen the Eve Ensler play, “The Vagina Monologues” three times now, including one where my dear friend who recently graduated fromm college, was cast in the play on BU campus.

Crowds of Women and men at the “Super Dome of Love”

I remember Amanda our Code Pink Boston Organizer at a recent meeting asking if people wanted to go to New Orleans, LA to see this celebration of women who want to stop rape and sexual abuse forever. Marina’s theatre troop at the very end of the play invited people to go to New Orleans ato see this play being preformed by “big name” actresses so I decided to go and see this once-in-life time event.

I stayed in a Hotel very close to the “Super Dome of Love,” and was awe-inspired by all the love and caring atmosphere of the “rock concert” of 30,000 plus women (and men) supporting the awareness of rape and sexual abuse all over the world. The numbers were alarming and the descriptions of the monologues being perfomed by Jane Fonda who I saw 20 ft. being driven away in a small golf cart waving at everyone Rosario Dawson, Shriley Knight, Amber Tamblyn, Monique Wilson and Jennifer Beals The L Word and Doris Roberts. Faith Hill brought the house down along with Eve Ensler with their singing and dancing on stage. I laughed, was sad and felt empowered after it was over and proud to be part of all of this.

Dr. Denis Mukwege, Domocratic Republic of Congo, receiving the first annual Dr. Denis Mukwege Award at V-10

The event raised over $ 700,000 for public support, 125 speakers, 40 “big name” stars and over 800 volunteers. including over 30,000 attendees.

YAY!

Thank you for posting this. I get to live vicariously through you. I wanted to go to V to the 10th but alas, the trip from NY to New Orleans is a little too far and costly.

I’m glad you went. Looks like an amazing expereience

Your very welcome...

Yes, it was an amazing trip and never thought I would ever have the chance to be part of Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues 10 year anniversary. I arrived later than I wanted to Saturday afternoon, and went down to the Super Dome of Love. As I went inside Jane Fonda was being driven in a golf cart. Inside the Dome was tributes to women, art work, tributes to the Vagina Warriers. Seeing that Hugh V-10 on the middle of the stage with a live band playing in the back, they put on a awesome musical show, dancing and jazz.

They were selling t-shirts like crazy. Sizes were limited, the Vagina Bags which I wanted to buy for some of my women friends were all gone, including ball caps. They only accepted cash, no credit cards.

The play was shown in the Super Dome Threatre behind the Dome itself. It was a packed crowd and we could see the stage looking down from our seats. I met a couple of young women who belonged to Code Pink California, and told them I was a member of Code Pink Boston. Both of them visited the national Code Pink House located in Washington, DC.

As I mentioned after seeing two college productions of the play, seeing “casted actresses play the parts on stage was amazing. It was like they were made for the parts! The best “monologues” were “Hair”; “The Flood” by Doris Roberts ; “Because he liked to look at it…”My Angry Vagina” and “Reclaiming Cunt…in four different languages…”The woman who loved to make Vaginas Happy which featured the ending of “Moaning Vaginas” performed beautifully by Jennifer Beals and some of the cast of the “L Word” Jane Fonda did Eve Ensler’s new monologue, Faith Hill was lovely and sang and danced beautifully with her group. Eve presented Dr. Denis Mukwege with the first annula Dr. Denis Mukwege Award for his work with helping women in the Congo.

After it was over, I just had to sit there and take it all in, how all of these beautiful women worked so hard for putting on a major event like this. Eve Ensler is and has always been my Feminist Superhero, she is simply amazing. I received countless thank yous from many women who thanked me for being there and supporting their cause. This made me feel very happy and so glad I had a chance to go and do this. Thanks again for your comments.
