Remove/ replace plastic household items
I had never thought of this before... 7 months ago

...but after seeing this goal online, I felt it was something good to do. Now to convince the wife. :)

Isn’t it? Just seems like the natural thing to do… :)

Rana exhaustion is weakening my soul

hmmmm

yeah, just know how many things I could get rid of…
Like what about food storage containers and freezer bags?
I have found better storage containers for “stuff”... mostly from my grandparents old boxes, metal and wood…
And I don’t think I could change from plastic to metal clothes hangers… I have slowly bought some wooden ones, but they are expensive.
Can’t get rid of things, like my old VHS tapes, or do anything about the cases my DVD and CD’s are in…
Any ideas???

Stuff...

I know what you mean, those old boxes, crates, and chests are nicer than a plastic tub. I think it would be hard to do away with freezer bags, though. Glass containers work well for food storage sometimes.

As far as the dvd’s and cd’s go, I got rid of most of the cases for them. I keep all of my movies and music (well, most of my music is on mp3 now, anyways) in leather binders. It takes up a lot less space and it makes it easy to flip through if you’re organized (I keep mine alphabetized). The exceptions are my blu-ray discs, the few video games I own, and a few of my favorite movies… I still have all the cases for them.

Coat hangers… that’s actually one I haven’t even noticed yet. I do have a few nice wooded ones. I can see how it would get expensive replacing all of the plastic ones. A good long term goal to work towards, though.

hmmm

I could see putting my music in a storage thing… but not my movies, there’s something about being able to browse through them…looking at the covers to figure out what I want to watch… you know??
Yes, the coat hangers do add up. Funny thing, last night I had a dream about shopping… and I bought 2 “packs” of wooden hangers. LOL :)

How would you store food?

What about cleaning products in spray bottles? Shampoo bottles? I think it’s a great goal but it seems like plastic is everywhere. What’s the alternative for these things?

For me...

This isn’t really about removing every plastic item from my entire house. I wouldn’t have the patience to do away with all of it. I mainly see this as trying not to accumulate unneeded plastic. I also want to replace all of my tupperware type stuff with glass containers. I want most of the things I own to be stored in ways that are natural and organic. I don’t want to have plastic bins that I keep things in… I’d rather have a wooden chest or cabinet. It’s going to be expensive and probably take a lot of time, but I think I’ll eventually get there…

But I agree that it would be hard to completely get rid of plastic in one’s life.

Hey Frannie…

It is really a challenge – but I have found that if you are really determined to avoid plastic, you can
do things like make your own eco-freindly household cleaners??

I haven’t been that determined, at least not yet.

Shampoo is an easy one – I buy a bar of shampoo at LUSH about every two years and they work just great, plastic free!

Spray bottles, that is a tough one.

I agree with Josh, that it is not about getting rid of every bit of plastic in your life, and more about thinking about the things we consume and whether we need the, – whether we want them to last, etc.

and I agree with you that it is very difficult!

But not impossible

I saw your post about a glass juice pitcher. It made me think about the iced tea pitcher I want to replace. I’ll get glass or ceramic. It’s a start. Thanks!

What helps..;

I think the changeover to things that aren’t material, rather mental is the thing to hold on to.

Plastic is all waste, what we don’t need.
