build a kotatsu (read all 2 entries…)
Getting started 19 months ago

I’ve been looking at how coffee tables are built since I decided to start this project and I think it’d be fairly straightforward. In fact, our old coffee table got busted the other week so it’s been leaned against our wall for a while while we decide if we’re going to fix it or not. I think I’m going to follow the same idea for the support for my kotatsu.

Something interesting. My husband and I like to entertain multiple friends, so I’ve decided that a small square or rectangular table would not work for us. Instead I’ve decided to try making a slightly larger octagonal top so that there’s more leg room. I’ll have to make a futon to match, but I still have a while until winter arrives.

Any thoughts?

Comments:

I like the idea of an octagonal kotatsu to fit your needs. Are you going to do a square frame or try and make it octagonal as well? Coffe tables seem to be better suited than regular tables to using the top since the top is less often a stressed mamber of the frame. It might be interesting to play with making the frame for the coffee table just to see if there are any problems along the way. I imagine you could just move the heater after that

square frame

I’ve decided to go with the square frame but the octagonal top. Every non-rectangular table I’ve seen usually has 4 legs still, and it’ll be easiest to work with. It’ll be interesting to see how this comes out, and I’m eagerly anticipating tossing my old couch!
