Complete my submission for Project #32 (read all 3 entries…)
Getting a grip 20 months ago

I’m a member of an online writing group. We’re a closed community with members from around the world. The group always has a couple of themed challenges running, the idea being to provoke new work from members.

One of the current challenges (Project #32) fits in well with my Creative Writing Honours thesis, as they are both on mental illness. The deadline is April 30th.

So far I have the beginning and most of the end written. I just have to fill in the middle. It’s not a long story so I’m reasonably confident I’ll get it done. However a busy weekend means that this is going to come down to the wire.

It feels good to be writing, though.

Perfectionism is the enemy.

At this stage I’ll be happy just to complete it and hand it in. I’ll see what feedback it gets before I start to tinker too much.

Perfection is the enemy…yes! They say with art, and it was meant to mean paintings, but now I think it means all forms, that you’re supposed to stop fussing and tinkering BEFORE you think it’s perfect. And do I ever believe that…overworking a painting…thinking…just something more, it needs something…and then voila! it’s somehow lost its way and doesn’t look right. Do you think this applies to writing too?

On the other hand, sometimes you just need to leave it alone for a little while and come back to it.
