plant a tree for Gabriel (read all 5 entries…)
What kind of tree? 20 months ago

We have the spot in our yard picked out for Gabriel’s tree to be planted, but no actual tree yet. I don’t know what KIND of tree we want yet, either.

I don’t believe in the Zodiac, but I thought it would be symbolic to plant his Celtic Zodiac tree, the Willow. However oak trees are very symbolic to Tommy and I as well, as we were married beneath the oak tree in the back field.

And as much as I love the weeping willow, the water requirements would be impossible.

But then again, maples are in great abundance here – our ditch is growing several tiny maples that need to be relocated…

This site allowed me to enter in the traits I’m looking for; fast growing and shade, and this site is allowing me to see if it will grow in our zone. (Because goodness forbid that arborday.com include CANADA as part of the zone map! Doing THAT would make sense!)

And I came across the willow oak. Now there is an idea…

I used to be a member...

...of a garden club here in Augusta, and one assignment that I really enjoyed was giving a “tree report” every month. I learned so much. FYI, there is a book out that was published about two years ago about oak trees and how important they’ve been throughout history, because they have a wider range (at least in the northern hemisphere) than any other tree. It was a really fascinating book, and I recommend it. If you’re interested, I’m sure I could track down the title and author.

My parents planted a little Christmas tree near the backdoor for me when they bought their first house. I felt very special to have my own tree. :)

Yes, please!

If you could find out the title and author, I’d love to read it!

I love our oak tree, but sadly it has that oak tree blight – I don’t know if it just affects the specific kind of oak we have or what, because when we were in KY, I noticed none of the oaks there (and they were practically ALL oaks!) had it. But they were also the rounded leaf oak, and ours is different.

When my twin sisters died, it was October and the forest along our property had turned color. There are two maple trees there that year after year, show up red and orange, and my mom has always said those trees are their trees.

I put a recommendation...

...on all-consuming for you with the title and author of the book about oaks. Hope you enjoy it. :)

I was just looking at one of the oak trees in my yard today, and it’s looking a little blighted. I’ll have to do some research on that. The book I recommended is more historical and cultural, and not very botannical, if I remember correctly.

Thank you

I recieved your recommendation!
We’ll be going to the library soon, too. Thank you! (:
