The food crisis 19 months ago

I just signed a petition urging world leaders to tackle the food crisis now gripping the world. This is important and I thought you might like to sign it too:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/world_food_crisis/tf.php?CLICK_TF_TRACK

Have you noticed food costing more when you shop? It’s happening all over the world, and it’s devastating poorer countries. Rocketing prices are squeezing billions and triggering food riots. In Sierra Leone alone the price of a bag of rice has doubled, now unaffordable for 90% of citizens.

I appreciate Avaaz’s perspective on this. It’s not just a matter of shipping loads of grain from the United States to other parts of the world. The biofuels craze & “free trade” policies are at the root of this & need to be addressed: “The prices of staple foods like wheat, corn and rice have almost doubled, and the crisis is slipping out of control—so we’re calling for immediate action on emergency food aid, speculation and biofuels policy, while asking forthcoming summits to tackle deeper problems of investment and trade.”

Let’s press our leaders to address the real issues.

Troubling stuff. I’ve signed it – thanks Ruth.

Have you noticed...

Yes! Milk has gotten so expensive that it’s at about the same price as organic was this time last year… If I’m noticing, I bet there are a lot of people out there really hurting.

My country is

one of the world’s major dairy producers, yet recently there have been news items about how families are rationing the amount of milk and cheese their children eat. Some supermarkets don’t even stock one kilo blocks of cheese anymore, because sales have dropped so much due to the increased prices.

It's pretty crazy huh?

I didn’t realise people were having it so rough until the news stories this week. I guess I am a little ignorant of it because I buy organic and while milk has gone up 50c I have not noticed it with other products, though I don’t buy cheese apart from feta.

In the United States,

I hear that corn is going to be rationed – or maybe it is already being rationed in a subtle way. It’s such a ubiquitous food here: Mexican food is the most popular fast food, corn syrup is used to sweeten MANY prepared foods & beverages. The ripple effect may be enormous!

It's

certainly going to be interesting.

Disturbing..

... to say the least. Thankyou Ruth – signed!

But...

...I thought the most important issues in the world today are, in order:

1. Whether someone wears a flag pin.

2. Whether someone lies about their political credentials.

3. Whether someone listens to a sermon that spurs people to action instead of sitting on their tuchas.

At least, I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ve learned watching the news lately. Food crisis? Energy policy? Universal health care? Apparently, not important.

I thought of you this week

when I saw this cartoon in my local paper.

What we need is a reduction in fuel usage generally so that the need for bio fuel will not be so prevalent. But you already know this I’m sure.

Also the reduction in the use of plastics made from oil would help with the reduction fuel use. Not to mention plastic has no soul hah!

Amen

& amen!

I tried to find some sources

about the economic efficiency of a vegetarian diet but the only ones I could find were from vegetarian websites which hardly makes for a balanced argument! Still makes sense to me though. I don’t eat much dairy so haven’t really noticed the increased cost but I believe it’s massive.

The big problem in African nations is that there are so many other socio-economic issues – or should I say political issues. I’m astounded that Africa continues to hang in there by the skin of its teeth considering what it has endured. Nothing changes.
