10 months, 3 weeks and 3 days and I know enough to confuse people (read – walk into the local police station and plead guilty to stealing my neighbor’s pig’s feet). It’s time to take it to the next level…

Where are you from? I just moved from the states to Bratislava to live with my Slovak wife. I’ve been here almost a month and I’m finding that learning the language isn’t coming to me so quickly. Any tips?

I’m also from the US. Congratulations on your move, you definitely made a good decision in coming. As I’m sure you have noticed, the country is modernizing quite rapidly and most young people speak at least some English, especially in Bratislava, and are quite patient/helpful with a foreigner’s Slovak. As for learning Slovak, I can maybe put it best like this – I studied Czech diligently for one year with a private teacher while I was living there; I have been here in Slovakia for a little over a year and spent the first half studying on my own and the past few months with a private teacher. i am making progress, and can have basic conversations, get around on my own, etc. but still need A LOT of work. I should add that this isn’t my first time learning a foreign language. So, find a good teacher, pick up a copy of “Slovak For You” and a “Lingea” dictionary on www.martinus.sk, prepare for a lot of hard work, a lot of miscommunication, frustration and embarrassing situations :) and in 2 to 3 years, you should be well on your way to fluent conversation. Most teachers seem to be of the opinion that 5 to 7 years is necessary for a native English speaker to become fully fluent in a Western Slavic language. So there you go. Don’t get discouraged, though. It’s a fun adventure and people here are really quite helpful. The bureaucracy on the other hand, is another story all together :) after a year of navigating the bureaucratic labyrinth, I finally have my permanent residency, so if you need any info there, I am more than happy to help, and trust me, you need ALL the inside info you can get!
So you’ve got me very curious as to why you were in czech and why you have been here in slovakia so long, and also why the hell it took a year to get your permit. I hope mine doesn’t take that long. Anyway, if you wanna chat, write me at seanieman.sk@gmail.com
take it easy
someone commented on my post but was talking to you. I don’t know if you would get a notification like that on 43 things so here is what he wrote:
mlieko,
My wife and I are planning to move to Trencianska Tepla in the spring next year, and I am desperate to learn as much Slovak as I can prior to the move. Slovak For You has been a nice tool, but the cases are something I can’t seem to wrap my head around. Do you know of any schools or tutors in the Trencin area? I would also be willing to travel to Trnava for instruction, Bratislava is out of the question however.
Could you please elaborate on your problems in pursuing the permanent residency. I am married to a Slovak citizen and we have had a lot of trouble getting her residency here in the states. Should I expect the same in Slovakia? I do have other questions for you if you like to help. Thanks
hey mlieko
I’ve been here for almost 3 months now, still can’t speak, don’t really have any friends or contacts yet. You care to meet up sometime, or at least chat online? It’d be cool to hang out with another alien here. Email me.
