use the library instead of buying books (read all 4 entries…)

Worth doing!

Challenge officially over  — 3 months ago

and I’ve managed not to buy any books. I have started going to the library about once a week. And I’ve borrowed books from friends, coworkers, random strangers off the street (OK not that last one, least not yet). I’m still going to keep this as a goal a while longer as I still need to get more comfortable actually browsing at the library.

Comments:

weekly library habit

A weekly habit. Oh yes. This is a grand idea. I tried to make it a once-every-three weeks habit. But it’s hard to keep that rhythm.

Do you go the same day every week? Or do you just keep it so that you just go sometime during the week? I really need to start doing this. As much as i would like to have one day a week be my library day, I’m sure it would work out logistically. Perhaps Tuesday should be my loose day for now.

Do you have a library near you? I’m thinking that also helps greatly. The Sulzer Library is a couple blocks south of my western brown line stop. Unfortunately, I live north of the brown line. I should really make it a habit to go weekly.

Hooray for you in making it a habit to use the library.

You don’t feel comfortable browsing in the library? That’s curious. Why not? I’m so full of questions! Excuse my questionfullness, but i just get really excited about Library. :-D :-D :-D

Inquiring minds, eh?

Wow, you DO get excited about the library. I’ll try to fit all my answers for you.

Generally, I tend to go on Tuesdays, just because it worked out best in my schedule. I go weekly because I tend to read quickly. The Sulzer Library is the closest to me as well (I live north of the Damen Brown Line), but I’ve been going to the Harold Washington branch downtown. And I’ve been “cheating” lately by reserving items online throughout the week, and just picking them up on Tuesdays in the popular library section.

As for the comfort thing, I’m not sure what it is – probably because I’m still not sure of the library layout and don’t like to have to bother someone for directions. Also, I’ve noticed that some librarians tend to go look for the book for you when I’ve asked in the past. That doesn’t help me know where to find it in the future. Now, a map of the library stacks would help. That would help a lot.

My friend, Library

I wrote the following on my blog five years ago:

Awww, Library. Such a good old friend, Library. Always there for you. Always so willing to give you knowledge. But Library doesn’t brag or show off its knowledge. Library just sits there and lets you come in. You ask Library a question, Library has an answer. Sometimes you have to dig into Library’s heart, but you will find your answer. And on the way to discovering the answer, Library will give you so many other awesome interesting roads to take.

Smartkookie has gotten 3 cheers on this entry.
