eat llama meat in south america
Untitled 20 months ago

You cannot believe how delicious it is. I don’t eat that much meat normally, but there I was, picking fresh llama meat out of a bowl, spearing it with a kebab with some onions, grilling it in a little Andean village, and then eating it with llama blood dripping down my chin and sleeves. HIGHLY recommended.

Does Alpaca count?

I lived in Per for 3 years and frequently traveled and stayed with the Andean people in the mountains … and never once saw llama meat being eaten.

But I did once partake in grilled Alpaca heart … it was fantastic. But about 15 minutes later, I had the gamiest breath ever.

Like I had eaten a dead racoon from the side of the highway that had baked in the midday sun for 2 weeks at least.

But the actual eating of the Alpaca anticuchos was DELICIOUS. I ate it many times.

Sure, I think alpaca counts. I’d have accepted any of the other camelids. Alpacas are the only ones I haven’t seen yet, but llamas are the only ones I’ve eaten.

The thing is, I think llamas are actually protected, so I’m not surprised that you didn’t see them eaten. I ate mine in Machuca, a small village outside of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. I probably should feel more guilty about eating llama and onion anticuchos, but I was able to pet a llama about five minutes later without a tinge of remorse. Because it was so delicious.

Cheers/Salud :)
