I downloaded GIMP and it seems to be ok. I need to play with it, but for now I think it will be good enough and therefore I am crossing this off the list.

Gimp has gone a long way since it’s early days, and it’s now running neck to neck with photoshop. Most people who use it say they can pretty much do the same stuff, I haven’t felt that, may be cause photoshop has been there all through my design life.
Thanks for the note. I don’t do anything with it other than crop photos and do some cloning to get rid of people, simple stuff like that. Its working pretty well so far. Maybe when I get more advanced I will notice a difference.

You can find some Gimp users on Deviant Art, they have many tutorials to learn,
I also use a web based program, to do some simple photo editing, especially with my online picture albums, using this you can edit images in flickr, or photobucket by simply using the url,
I will stop blabbering, you can check ti here;

I have some photos that arent 8×10 that I am trying to get printed. I am using one of those machines that will only print classic sizes. When I print something that is, say 6×9 it blows up the middle so that it is 8 instead of 6 inches and then crops the rest of the photo. How do I fix this? If I set the canvas size as 8×10 and leave the print size alone, will it print out and look like its supposed to?

with my Old HP printer I have an option that says print actual size, and the print comes out with unprinted area if the size is small,
On the other hand if print to fit has been checked, that may blow up the image to fit to print size.
We cant proportionately increase the size, as 6X9 one up would be 8X12
you could make a new file in Gimp with set size of 8X10 inches and import your 6X9 image and position it center, leaving the background blank, it will come out as unprinted when you print the file, a little use of scissors or an artwork blade, you should have your 6X9 photos,
Hope this helps, any questions please do ask.
