About a year ago, I got motivated to start taking care of myself after 25 years as a couch potato. Started walking, took a strength training class, realized walking wasn’t enough (but still too heavy to jog), started climbing some hilly streets, found a nature center I never knew about, found some trails above the nature center – now I am hiking 3 or 4 days a week, 3 miles minimum, up to 6 or 7 miles max so far – loving it! Definitely outside my comfort zone – then I realized maybe the hikes I was doing, at the same locations, were just a NEW comfort zone – so I will continue to find NEW locations. DOing this alone – but am looking for hiking groups, etc. But I like the alone part as well.

very inspiring
I’m in that “trying to break out of couch potato” mode that you described as where you were a year ago. Your entry is encouraging – thanks for posting!
Thanks
Thanks for your comments. I will admit that I had an external motivation – my wife’s health problems – and the fact that I needed to stay healthy to care for her. I now have caregivers in for her 3 or 4 days a week, which gives me the time to stay active. I know when we were working, there were always too many other things to do – or, that was my excuse. If I even bothered to MAKE excuses. And my wife was not an exercise-type person. But her health problems made me realize there is no time to lose – to get healthy, and to enjoy every day while I can. So get out there!
