build up a network of Celiacs to facilitate gluten-free traveling (read all 2 entries…)
Had a great experience in Sweden 19 months ago

I went to the Ice Hotel in Lapland (north of the arctic circle) in March and in the small village we stayed in the supermarket had a whole section of allergy friendly foods.

The supermarket wasn’t big but there was a whole shelf in the chill cabinet of rice, oat and soya milks and desserts. There was a choice of rice cakes and gluten- and lactose-free crispbreads and I think bread too.

I was very surprised but really pleased.

Comments:

You should travel in Canada

In Mission British Columbia, Canada there is actually a gluten free restaurant.
Also, out there all the supermarkets had large decent stock of gluten free items. There is also many specialty stores that carried gluten free product. We made brownies one day!
There are even gluten free spices!
I am not celiac but the kids I used to live with were so I am still in the mindset of looking at labels, most places I have been in Canada have gluten free sections in the supermarket.
AND, here where I live in Thunder Bay Ontario one of our pizza places is advertising gluten free pizza!

I wish you luck

I wish you luck with this. I went travelling to France and Belgium with a girl who had Celiacs and it was so hard for her to find gluten free food.

She found a store brand type cheerios which was gluten free in Belgium, but that was it.

I suggest that when you go travelling to a carb loving country like France or Belgium,, bring as many snacks as you can in your suitcase, and the kind that won’t get confiscated at customs.

If you go on a cruise....

My mom is gluten intolerant as well and we recently went on a 1 week cruise to Alaska with Holland America. She asked for a Celiac diet when she bought the tickets, and she said it was the best gluten free food she’d ever had. They would give her the next nights dinner menu at dinner each night and she got to choose what she wanted. They could make everything on the menu gluten free except the desserts, but they had 3 extra ones just for gluten free cruisers. And their toast was apparently very good!
Good luck with your network!

Good to konw

I’ve always shied away from all you can eat or catered places and end up booking apartments, or cottages etc and packing a load of gluten-free pasta and rolls – vegetables and rice can be bought anywhere.

Theskysthelimit1976 And I would be good... even if I did nothing... Alanis

I didn't even ask...

...before hand but Norwegian Cruise Line to the Bahamas had GF, muffins, waffles, french fries, and bread… the maitre ‘d was well verse in keeping me “unglutened” the entire trip. They were awesome. Oh yes… and they had gluten free cookies for me too : )
