I love a cool shower...

..after a run on a hot day. It’s almost my favourite part.

Hey, Matty and I were talking and he pointed me at you cos he thinks you might be able to help me out, as a long-distance runner. I’m suffering some numbness in the soles of my feet while running, even though I’m only running short distances, and I mean really short, like, I’m on the first week of Couch to 5k again. Next time I get new running shoes I’m going to go for something a bit more cushioned, but do you have any idea what I could do about it in the meantime? Maybe some kind of insoles or something? Any ideas gratefully considered.

whoops

looks like I missed this one, sorry. I would love to help you out. the first thing that comes to mind is that your shoes are too small and/or they are laced too tightly. I wear a full size larger shoes than street shoes (and my montrails/trail runners are a size and a half larger). when your foot hits the ground, it needs some space to spread! make sure when you buy those cushion-y shoes, the shoe salesperson puts you on one of those old-fashioned measuring devices (in standing, not sitting). if they don’t have one, or don’t seem to know how to use it, walk, no, run out of the store.
it’s a problem I have seen again and again with women and running shoes. for some reason, shoe stores forget that we need our feet to function, not just look good.
if this doesn’t solve the problem, let me know!

Oops, late reply!

Sorry ‘bout that, I haven’t had a lot of 43T time lately (or time at all, to be honest). I did try lacing my shoes less tightly on my last couple of runs and that did seem to help a little. My shoes are also a full size larger than my normal shoes, which I always thought was odd, but now I know it isn’t. I think they put me in one of those machines when I bought my shoes – I remember there being machines, anyway, but I can’t really remember! It is a proper running shop, not a fashion shop, so they probably did. Next time I get running shoes I will ask them for ultra cushiony ones. At the moment I have an injured ankle (and wrist!) and no time or energy to run, so it’s all a bit immaterial right now, sadly, but I will bear all this in mind for the future.
