San Antonio - March '08

I had to go to a tradeshow / conference in San Antonio this past March. I added an extra weekend, and got to explore just a tad – mostly around the Riverwalk, which was beautiful. I tried numerous restaurants; got to see a dance school recital with numerous forms of flamenco, Moorish belly dancing, and more.

Treated myself to a marvelous gustatory experience at Las Canarias: the chef’s seasonal five course Tasting Menu, which was focused around Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit.

Alaskan Halibut Ceviche: Grapefruit Soy, Candied Pink Peppercorn and Roasted Pepper – served with a glass of Gewurztraminer Reserve

Petite Mache: Carmelized Sweet Onion and Goat Cheese, Candied Pecans and Texas Ruby Red Grapefruit Port Vinaigrette – served with a glass of Torrontes

Ginger Grapefruit Granite

Oven Roasted Pheasant: Fava Bean and Morel Mushroom Ragout, Truffled Carrot and Grapefruit Mojo – served with a glass of Pinot Noir

Chocolate Crusted Grapefruit Meringue Tart: Phyllo Dough Shell, Candied Grapefruit and Blood Orange Sauce – served with a glass of Gunderloch.

Lovely presentations, artful wine pairings, smooth service and imaginative and well executed dishes… it was well worth it!
