stop taking things so personally (read all 4 entries…)

I wonder if I will ever mark this as done! Maybe this is just going to be a venting space. Anyway….today’s issue is my performance review. I have had 2 performance reviews in my current job and they have both been good supposedly and yet, I don’t seem to get the financial recognition that comes with those reviews. And trust me, I ask for it cos that’s the only thing I care about.

So as I was doing this year’s one, it struck me…why waste my time? There is a certain amount of irony in investing so much time in writing a document, having a discussion, finding out that you have performed well and yet getting nothing in return.

So I may not bother doing it. I will explain that I consider the process to be flawed. Or am I just stupid?

Faustus is in unfamiliar territory!

I think

you should do it nonetheless. There is a certain latency in many systems (this is geek talk, but it’s needed to keep the system stable1), you’ll build up the necessary force to overcome that barrier by being consistent. If you refuse to submit your performance review, on the other hand, you’re choosing to deny yourself the “financial recognition” you deserve.

1. Consider a thermostat, for example, if it responds instantaneously to the surrounding conditions, at the set point, you’d get rapid on-off cycles (in your case, promotion-demotion at the end of each period). Instead, the system waits a little bit to make sure the external condition (or employee’s credentials) is real! Does that make sense?

Oh Faustus:)

I love your geek analogies! Does it make sense to me? You are talking to someone who dropped science as soon as it became optional. So you lost me at thermostat. But I love that you tried!!! Seriously though, I got over my tantrum and I did it. I will let you know the results as soon as I know. Thanks so much for your support:)

I'm

pretty sure you’re kidding, but have to take your word for it ;)

Best of luck with your performance review :)

Thermostats

Was that really the sexiest wikipedia entry you could find to try and turn me on to science???

Actually it might have been, because it contained the word thermocouples. Warm couples I’m thinking…. Interesting!!

Faustus is in unfamiliar territory!

I see

you’re already hooked ;)

I didn’t really intend to seduce you into science. I’d rather amuse you talking about two metal strips bending together when heated, you see :) That’s my icebreaker… ummm… not the circuit breaker!

Doing it would be a good idea

If you don’t, you definitely won’t get a pay rise, but you’ll get the label troublesome employee. Consistency is a good thing as Faustus points out – better to be known as that. If it doesn’t get you a pay rise this year, then at least if you apply for other jobs, you can point out that your performance is consistently above average.

You could ask how the remuneration review system works.

Thanks Denise

I’m already the office nerd/rebel. I don’t think I’m troublesome and I agree that it wouldn’t be a good position to be in. I asked how it works last year and the biggest problem with it is the complete lack of transparency. I don’t like that at all. I’ve decided to do it after all so I hope that I am treated fairly this year. Thanks for the support Denise. PS We must organise our meet up!!

sierrak Trying to stay Warm! The high today is upposed to be 15 degrees!

I agree....

it’s best to not rock the boat here. Perhaps in your discussion you can give your constructive ideas on improving the process.

Good idea Sierra

I have plenty of those!! Constructive is the best approach, I agree. Thanks:)

I had something similar...

I felt I was a grade below what I should have been. Not that the grade mattered… but there was a direct correlation between your grade and what you got paid.

So I went and saw my bosses’ boss. (My direct boss had been off sick for 6 or so months, and I sort of felt I was effectively running the department)

I just said that I thought I was doing the job of a grade 9 and would like to be recognised for it. But if he thought that I wasn’t, what could I do better/differently so I could actually earn the grade 9 position.

About two weeks later my promotion letter came through. (He was a great boss to work with… I’m sure he had his faults, but I can’t think of any right now)

I think the important thing here is, I’d couched the request in quite positive terms. Nothing like ‘pay me more or I’ll leave’. I genuinely loved the job and the people there. I think it’s just a matter of picking an effective method to achieve what you want. If it’s purely more money (or to be recognised financially for what you do) then set that as your target and put something into action that you feel is likely to achieve it.

Grow some girl-balls.
