Hey George, i’m glad to see you’re enjoying your class. I left a message for you on my site when you replied to one of my entries last time but i don’t think you read it. Anyway everything else in that reply was a pile of shit so basically i wrote a congratulations for getting into your class. I wrote other things too but i don’t remember what they were now.

Anyway, have fun in your class.

Why Thank you...

I would love to share more information about my Pop Culture class. We met twice a week in the evenings. The class has five (beautiful and gorgeous and very intelligent) women and myself. We have a male Professor, who used to work at a record store.

We are assigned about 3-5 books a week before each class and have to submit a response paper for the topics we discuss.

So far we have read:

Blue, Legacies and Black Feminism by Angela Davis

Stange Fruit by

Movie MAde America… by Robert Sklar

Make Room for TV… by Lynn Spigel

Hip: The History by John Leland

The Theory of the Leisure Class by T. Veblen

Popular Culture…Hebert J. Gans

Highbrow Lowbrow…by L. Levine

Cheap Amusements…by Kathy Peiss

Strange Fruit: the Biography of a Song by David Margolick

Sections/Chapeter from Homeward Bound… by Elaine Tyler May

Reading Football…by M Oriard

Bananas, Beaches and BAses by Cynthia Enloe (not finished yet)

The Seventies by B. Shulman (same not finsihed)

Where the Girls are By Susan Douglas (love this book!)

Subculture…by Dick Hebdige (strange book to read..but interesting)

Cultural Theory…John Storey (not finished yet)

Mystery Train… by Greil Marcus

In addition to writing response papers we also have to make a class presentation and a portfolio of all our response papers.

I am sorry to say the last class is next Wednesday because I loved the readings and the support of all the students in the class. I love them all and my time in class. I learned so much about pop culture and feminism. It was not really work reading these books, more of a passion!

Thx George =)

For this detailed info, it sounds really exciting to get involved with the happenings of 20th century, feminism, jazz or pop culture and I’ve already added some of these books to my reading list :)

Nowadays I’m about to read a book called : Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the 20th Century by Greil Marcus. Have any idea about how is it like?

Thank you once more, I’ll keep following your entries :)

Greil Marcus’s book Lipstick Traces:A Secret History of the 20th century appears to be about the ‘Sex Pistols,

his first experience with them in fact…DADA, Michael Jackson, Punk first came out in 1989.

His other book, I read was, Mystery Train, was about “Elvis, Sly Stone, “The Band” which was Bob Dylan’s band and Randy Newman.”

In class we disputed his book because he had nothing to back up his arguments. We could not figure out why Randy Newman? Why didn’t he mention the Beatles? I think he just wanted to write about American bands and what made these particular bands so popular, even though “the Band” is Canadian American.

However, in the latest edition (5th) he goes back and rewrites an updated version of his original book, so I would say read the 11 positie of the 27 total reviews from amazon.com and it’s most likely a good book to read about the Sex Pistols and Griel’s cultural theory…I would be interested in reading it myself. Let me know after you’ve read it…

Ahh, ok then… I think I need a book that’s more telling about Beatles, the hippie soul, 1968, Woodstock concerts and all those people who struggled to change the world to better. Not mentioning that punk music or bands like Sex Pistols etc. were useless and unnecessary, but guess that they were not too effective about spreading humanism and peace as Beatles.

So, thank you for this information, I’d love to know if there’s any book that you know about what I told!

Have a wonderful day :)
