buy a laptop
the choice of buying PC or Mac

this was quite tough for me. first consideration was financial in nature. next was size. then there was the choice between getting a PC or a Mac. an IBM ThinkPad (T-series or X-series) or an Apple iBook 12”.

first choice is of course the PC/Windows format since that is what i already know how to use, and a ThinkPad because i think it would be an advantage, in terms of purchase and services discounts and proximity to service center, that i work for an IBM subsidiary. yet considering my budget, which isn’t a lot coz i also need to invest in photographic equipment, i was considerably attracted to the iBook 12” for it’s size vs. price quality. not to mention the sleek styling it has over the ThinkPads. don’t get me wrong. i love the ThinkPad. it’s all black body is very professional. it’s just that i’ve been around them for the last 12 years, and these gems are indeed very sturdy workhorses.

going back to size vs. price, i was hoping to get a TP X41 but it was way too expensive for it’s configuration. it was twice the price of the basic iBook 12” and yet it didn’t have as much RAM, as much hard disk space, nor an optical drive. even the TP T42 will be a better buy if you want more beef to your buck. even with the considerable discounts given during the employee sale held august of this year, it wasn’t substantial enough for what the iBook 12” was offering.

so in the end, i got myself the iBook. nevermind that there aren’t a lot of compatible software for the OS X around. am sure i’ll have a lot fun working with iLife. there’s always the office TP for PC/Windows stuff. nevermind that i never worked with OS X before. a technocrat like me will always find her way around it. i’ll just be porting all my photography work to the mac anyhow. hopefully it could also last as much as a ThinkPad.

Great choice

I used to be such a PC geek. I switched to Apple a little over a year ago and I’ll NEVER go back to the PC/Windows hell I was living in. Especially if you do a lot of photography things on your computer you’ll love the mac. Once you get through the initial learning process and learning how to do things the easy OS X way you’ll love it also.

Hope it works out as well for you as it did for me! :-)

no regrets

there are still a lot of things to learn, but am very much having fun in the process. i’ve just recently learned that our company has a little mac community i can tap. =D

Is there an Apple store near you?

When I got my Mac I was lucky enough to have a Apple store nearby. If you have one in your area most of them teach FREE classes to help you learn about your new computer. If you go into the store just ask someone about classes and they’ll let you know when the classes are and which classes are for what. There is 1 big general class which is like an overview of the computer, and operating system, etc. And then there are classes for specific programs. Hopefuly there’s a store in your area to get you a little boost with learning about your new toy! If not, just grab onto the Mac geeks at work (Mac people are cool geeks!) and learn things from them. Also I’m no expert, but if you have a fairly simple question feel free to ask.

Good luck, and welcome to the Apple world :-)

not from where am from

we only have resellers out here. am not aware of any classes they have, but i do get to learn the basics on apple online anyhow. fortunately i’ve also learned that we have a global mac community where i work.

That's good

Fortunately Mac users are very friendly. If you have a community there I am sure they will be more than happy to help you adjust to life away from your PC. Or you could ask me, and I will try to help you as much as I can.

Mac Geek

My husband is a bonafide MacGeek and has been for years. He does web and graphic design and photography. This makes the rest of us Mac geeks by default. Its all I’ve ever used, so I wouldn’t know the PC hell on the other side. Good luck with your iBook!
