cycling 83.2 miles
swimming 9.32 miles
walking no idea

I’ve been thinking about my original cycling and swimming goals for 2008:
- 3000 miles cycling
So far this year I rode 605 miles, I would have to ride 343 each month which seems quite impossible. It’s not fun to chase an unrealistic goal. But perhaps I still have a change to do 2500? If I ride aprox 271 miles every month until the end of 2008 I may be able to do this! So yes, I’ll try 2500!

- 130 miles swimming
So far this year I did 41.43 miles. Perhaps I’m being too optimistic here but yes, I believe 130 miles are still possible, provided I increase my laps and carry on swimming at least 4x a week.

As for walking: I’m finding it hard to keep track, I tend to use mapmyfitness.com (which I already use to keep track of my cycling) but it can get boring and time consuming. Not sure what to do about this.

Anyway, I still have 1895 miles to cycle and 88 miles to swim this year. Go me, I can do this!

that’s an impressive amount of swimming you’ve done!

I track my rides and hiking in Excel. There’s a little work each year to set up the roll-up reports, but it’s simple for book keeping: date, how far, weather, and an optional note.

I always

used to keep track in Excel, too. Then started relying on my Nike Plus. And now just track it here. As if I were an actual athlete – ha!

perhaps a very silly question...

But I’ll ask anyway: when you guys go for a walk/run how do you know how many miles you did?

For the first time I’m determined to keep track of my mileage. I’m using an excell file to keep track of info such as:
date / miles / route / bike used.

But in order to update my file I need to know how many miles I did. So for bike rides I believe the most sensible thing would be to have a small odometer attached to the bike (which I still don’t have, so that’s why I’m using mapmyfitness). But what about walks/hikes? Do you guys walk/run with some device, or perhaps time your exercise and estimate, go for known routes…? When you are back from a walk, how do you know how many miles you just did?

I

am very lucky – my boss is an awesome guy (and an ex-runner turned biker) who bought me a Garmin as part of my Christmas gift last year, so I use that now. Prior to that my Nike Plus chip tracked it, and when I synched the i-Pod on my computer could give me all kinds of cool data, even in the form of a graph. The Nike Plus was about $30.

I’ve had odometers for running before, but always seemed to have trouble getting accurate readings because you have to calibrate them to your stride (not fun for mechanically disinclined moi), and I found my stride might vary.

When I asked for one of those cheapo odometers for my bike as a birthday gift several years ago (thinking I could also get readings for my running routes) I made the mistake of asking my Hubby, who is a gadget guy. He totally pissed me off by getting this expensive on-board computer that tells you everything but the temperature in Siberia, which I find totally unusable and frustrating. It was so difficult to install that even he, Mr. Rocket Scientist, couldn’t do it – we had to hire a friend in the biking club. Now I just strap my Garmin on the handlebar!

Good luck finding the right odometer or whatever. I’m thinking you might want to ride the route on your bike using the odometer after running or walking it (that was my original plan).

thank you DoubleN :)

now I have an idea of things to look for, this Garmin you have sounds brilliant! Hm I could use the extra incentive, if I finish my 271 bike miles for this month I could buy myself a gadget next month for my birthday. How great, thanks, now I’m excited about this.

By the way your hubby sounds a bit like Mr Pcyclepath. When I mentioned this to him he made all sorts of suggestions, it seems I can attached something to my phone… not sure I got that one right so I need to investigate further, anyway here I go into gadget-land!

Truly

very impressive!
