join Doctors without borders
After grad school 18 months ago

If I get a PhD in Counseling Psychology, I will definitely spend a year or two in Doctors Without Borders. I can’t even articulate how much respect I have for this organization…

I should contact somebody from DWB and get some tips for what to do in the next 4-6 years while I’m in Grad School… things I should do to make myself a better candidate. Which foreign language to study? Is there any real world experience they want me to have? Etc.

My experience

with MSF is that they really do not require too much, just a desire to go and do and to be flexible as things can get kind of stressful in ways that are hard to imagine ahead of time. 60% or so of the projects are in Africa, so spending some time in Africa is helpful. In my case I had been to Africa about 4 times before with other organizations, so I had a track record, but a lot of people I worked with had never been overseas ever. MSF is pretty laid back, so as long as you have some nice recommendations, and are not psychotic, they will find a place for you.
