I’ve read three out of the seventeen for now :)
‘Monstrous Regiment’ by Terry Pratchett – one of his best books, IMO, although, of course, still not good as Night Watch (nothing is). I didn’t like the ending particularly – it was too MUCH, sort of (but I won’t reveal anything). But the MIDDLE part was SUPERB – both funny and serious; Terry at his best :D
‘How the Light Gets In’ by M. J. Hyland – they call it Catcher in the Rye of the 21st century. Tht’s just too much. The book is fine – pretty honest, simple, and strong. It’s a first person narrative (I’m sucker for those), the writing style is relaxed and good (except for a few soppy sentences, but I’ll forgive that), and the main character is VERY likable. I identified with her quite a lot, although I’m older… You’d have to be heartless not to like Lu Connor :) Cather in the Rye it is not, but it’s good.
‘The Commitments’ by Roddy Doyle – Good old Roddy for you. It’s good. His books always are. And it’s, as usully, funny. The ending seemed a bit rashed to me, but what the hell. It’s not really a novel, more like a novella. Good, quite enjoyable, but not as strong as Paddy Clark :) (I know it won a Booker, and I don’t care…)
