read hamlet... the essence of reading? (read all 4 entries…)
Achievable, yes. But worth trying? 4 years ago

I’m not that sure. Does humanity really need to read hamlet? And me, in particular?

Imagine you die, and your goals stay somewhere, in a computer belonging to “www.43things.com”. There will be for me “read hamlet”. Sound ridiculous, no? This guy chooses 7 goals for his life, one of them is “read hamlet”.

Bahhh. Ridiculous goal.

Or is it the essence of humanity? ;-)

Comments:

I have to say that Hamlet was one of the best plays I have ever read. The neat thing about reading it (and understanding it) is that you can get so many allusions to it.

I guess it just depends on how much you want to know about what guides us…

What guides us?

My first thought was “greed” (standard wordly and cynical mind). Then “love” (believing mind).

Then, my scientific mind started and “ADN” flashed as the phrase to be answered.

What guides us? How do we make our decisions? I do not know.

Does Hamlet answer to what?

i guess since that is not a very easy book to read it can been seen as a great achivment when you have done it…

It can been seen

Do you mean I could get some kind of social advantage to read this book?

By the simple fact I read it?

Engrossed in your own moral dilemma

Good and bad.

Are these the right concepts to live by?

The fish

I am lazy here and I repost something I posted elsewhere about this fish image.

“The fish image is for me a proof that nature “lies”. This fish has a spot on its tail (is it the right word?) that makes other animals think it is its eye. This is a life saving trick. This fact may have some implications on the human mind and behaviour understanding.”

As for Hamlet, I would tend for madness. And by not reading Hamlet, I can pretend I can read the text in old English I have (the Arden Shakespeare S. Hamlet). Anytime I try to read it, I spend one hour page page reading the notes.

What I don’t understand is that in the book they never mention anything about the little village suggested by the title.

Pûf... This web site works!

I’ve caught myself today taking The Book with me and read it while joyfully travelling in the underground. Reached now act I, sc II. See the measurement of achievement of the goal? Am I in the right line of thought and action of the 43 Things website?

Easy irony aside, here is a little quote from Hamlet:
_How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable
Seem to me all the uses of this world!_
Act I, sc II, v133-134

Definitely worth it

Hamlet is definitely one play that everyone should read in their lifetimes. Why not finish the goal soon so that you don’t die with that on your list? I always tell my little cousins to start reading the “No Fear Shakespeare” series with the explanations on the opposite page. Go for it!
