Joyfully Pray For Myself And Others (read all 88 entries…)
Lying & Stealing 18 months ago

I would like prayer for my daughter, Hannalee. She has been stealing often and lots of lies. These are traits that are very much Henry’s and are really upon Hannalee.

The latest incident is she stole from a friend’s home that we were at on Tuesday. She said she took it because she liked it. It’s always the excuse. She has no remorse, except when she gets caught and punished.

The police have been involved now in 3 different situations, the school (principal, vice principal, psychologist, teachers), my church, my family, and I. I’m really beside myself and it makes me so angry.

She keeps doing this and I don’t know how to make her stop. I’m afraid one day she’ll end up in jail.

Thanks HC.

Actually, the therapist does have 1:1 time with each child without me. I’m in the waiting room the whole time.

She is very upset over the divorce. You just triggered something in me. She greatly misses her dad, and about 1/2 of the time, I’ve gotten him involved in her stealing episodes.

I can’t make Henry be responsible and keep to his word. He’s so into himself and his life, his needs, his stuff. He doesn’t realize how much it’s hurting our children.

flutter is full of wonder and watching God work

how old is Hannalee?

and how long has this been going on

if you don’t mind me asking

She will be in my prayers

Stats

Hannalee is 7, and will be 8 next month. She really began stealing a lot more after Christmas. It was a challenging Christmas for us as that was the first Christmas I was not able to buy Christmas presents for them.

However, my family was very generous and they got plenty. They have been used to us doing things before Henry left, and not spending all this money on all these expensive excursions and on items has been a huge change for them over this past year.

When she was much younger, she had a couple times of stealing where she got caught. But, since Christmas, she’s had many incidents and eventually, I’ve been the one to find out, though, I’m not actively looking to catch her. It just happens.

Thank you for your prayers, Flutter.

tknight is t'done t'day

The reason why....

Can be for many reasons.

I may have an odd perspective as I have been that kid.

No divorce, just the usual story of wife1...

then Mom and me...

then Wife2...

Dad I barely remember.

What I DO recall is that I spent a lot of time by myself.

One a result of my mother having to work to support us (no child support, no welfare, no social system, no family)...

The other a result of where we could afford to live (not a good part of town, a couple of rooms, shared bathroom down the hall knock before you go in, as person or persons may be occupied in … well whatever) surrounded by traffic and busy roads (three way intersection, a flat iron building)...

Combine that with the kids I encountered at my local school (about a mile down the road. I walked.) and I got involved in a dare

So I did (perceived honor was at stake)...

And did again.

And again.

You got social points for the size, quantity and value of what you boosted.

I never got caught.

But a friend did.

Me, I got scared straight. My only hope of leaving the slums was to buckle down at school and stay out of jail. I was one of only five in my neighborhood that ever made it out.

I was also lucky I talked myself off the ledge.

Your child was the one caught.

And more than once.

Attention perhaps has a reward, even when it is negative.

The trick is to provide the attention for the best reason of all…

she is your child.

My Child

Thanks Tknight.

I just don’t know how I need to provide for her in terms of attention. Without my soon-to-be exhusband here, our home is more peaceful overall, and I’m constantly using positive reinforcement, empowering them, letting them be children.

Right now, financially it’s a very challenging time and this divorce has been hell. I have kept strict tabs on our finances to manage things well, to help get us out of this situation that my ex- created.

It’s just not a good situation. I’ll give her more attention, but just not sure how to get her to turn around with all this stealing and lying.

lob is enjoying 2 weeks of time off from activities...

I don't have

any advice about lying and stealing. Just listen to God, and he’ll give you what you need to help Hannalee. You know her best and will be able to help her. I’ll pray for both of you to find the best way in this situation.

I appreciate it, Laurina!

Dear Doris,

I’m sorry to hear about Hannalee. I pray that things will work out for the best. I went through a shoplifting phase as a teenager, and later in life a therapist told me that stealing is a common childhood reaction to loss.

How are things going with Sean these days?

Stop

How did you stop?

Sean has been a bit defiant and rebellious, but he doesn’t lie and steal. His stuff seems minor compared to Hannalee, right now.

Thank you, Isabella!!!

How I stopped...

A friend of mine and I got caught. After a warning from the store security guards never to come into the store again, and a call to my stepmother, I was scared straight too, like tknight. Never did it again.

I will pray that something can intervene to help Hannalee stop, too.
