get better at small talk
Yes, I must admit... 18 months ago

I am bad at small talk. I try to keep conversations going with random people, but all I can manage is a quick one or two word answer. An answer that is usually followed by awkward silence.

My goal is to change that, and naturally have a little more to say.

Some good advice I’ve received from people is to educate yourself as much as you can. Read more books, newspapers, magazines, watch the news, learn something new about a different topic everyday. The more you know, the more you will have to say. Also, you can ask the other person a lot of questions. That way, they do the talking and you don’t have to talk as much. Hope this helps.

There is a simple method to create and keep a conversation going anytime and with anybody to avoid all those embarrassing moments (remember Pulp Fiction, the discussion in the Chevy between Uma Thurman and Travolta? No one has to powder it’s nose from now on :p).

I call it “lock picking” because (prepare for a mind blowing analogy with my name on it) it’s similar with picking a lock :). Either it’s a reply or a lock, the method says you have to analyze it’s structure and search for something that draws your attention, that’ just a little bit unusual. You just have to pay attention. After lock picking, a hole new conversation can open (just like a door does :p).

The idea is to listen and to analyze the last thing you discussion partner has last said. Then based on that word that you found strange, new, funny, curious, interesting etc.. formulate a new answer or a new question. And there you have it, the greatest tip for a successful meeting, date or just a casual conversation. :)

Hope it helps!
