This is an expensive city to live in. I find a large proportion of my money goes on foods – healthy food, organic foods, snacks out. I am learning to change my lifestyle when it comes to food, to eat more simply and yet nutritionally, where possible organically. I have had some success.

food budgeting is crazy!
even in small ville Canada, we’re not immune to high food costs. it’s hard; especially with a family were each of us has different tastes. i try my best – usually spending less than $300 a month on groceries. the worst is picking up fruits, veggies & juices at the market, then walking down a junk aisle and seeing pop for $.99 – i pay $5 for a carton of OJ, but i’ll be damned if i feed my family a constant stream of poison. like i said – i do my best – but it’s hard to shop healthy with low funds.
Ami really you are doing well on that amount of $s, especially with a family.
Personally I no longer drink high sugar pop but try telling that to the kids eh!? Have you tried the Unsweetened cans of concentrated OJ in the freezer of the supermarket? You can dilute it and it goes further that way.
Good luck!
:)
i’ve had a pop-free home for about a year now w/ only minor slip ups – not too hard since my boys never liked pop – mom was the Pepsi girl ;)
i bought frozen OJ for a long time, but it really just taste like rotten orange rind and it’s concentrated – a poor substitute for Tropicana.
Mme Delacroix why do I always come back here when I'm melancholy?
true, tropicana is the goods...
but i can’t afford it every time.
had a pop-free house for a few years, but since we’ve moved we’ve become lazier… it’s either a bottle of wine or ginger ale now. i gotta start implementing some new house rules ; )
OJ
I enjoy the Tropicana. I can’t remember right now if there is an unsweetened juice? A friend gave me a bottle of wine thats sitting in the fridge, it’ll probably wait for a special occasion.
My main effort is to reduce sugars – one has to read the labels; and also reduce caffeine by drinking herbal tea rather than coffee tho I’ll have a coffee each day.
Its so cool when kids refuse to drink pop by themselves! Good for them.
i'm pretty sure -
- that Tropicana, as well as the wine, just have the naturally occurring sugars. i’m trying to get away from refined sugar as much as possible. i’ve heard of an alternative called agave nectar that i’ve yet to look into other than the price – wow.
i’m a tea-aholic, but i’ve just cut down; decaf orange pekoe (at least for the brand i like) goes through a chemical process to get the caffeine out – not cool.
my kids are just odd ducks; never interested in sugar – Halloween and Easter don’t interest them. they like a home-baked pie, cookie or cake – but that’s fine with me – at least i know what i put in it.
