buy a diesel car and convert it to run on used vegetable oil
WANTED a Used 1990 or 1991 Volkswagen Golf Diesel 18 months ago

I am very excited about converting a diesel car to run on used vegetable oil. I have a very talented neighbor who is willing to do this for me for very little money; however, I cannot find a used diesel Golf anywhere. I want a Volkswagen manufactured before direct fuel injection became a feature in the early 1990s. If anyone has a lead on a car like this, please let me know. I live in MD and my phone number is 949-633-3660 (cell). I would appreciate your help.

Thank you,

Lisa

have you

checked out the classifieds on greasecar.com ? They have ads for diesels across the country. Also checking out craigslists for surrounding areas, say 200 mile radius, this is how i found my car, drove 4 hours to go get it, but it was exactly what i wanted.

Good luck!

what a great idea!

Is running, maintaining and fueling the car a lot of extra work?

only at the start

to get the filtration system up and running, since you have to filter out food particles out of used oil. To set up a relationship with a restaurant with a fryer. And to pick up the oil every week from them. but it means a lot fewer stops to a gas station, once every couple of months.

Although if you live in a groovy town, say, Portland OR, you can go to a biofuel station and buy pre-filtered recycled veggie oil for about a dollar or two a gallon…. i went to a retreat in Portland this month, and a quarter of the participants had driven up in a veggie car!

Greasecar.com has a lot of information. The engineer i bought my car from also has a fantastic website , with loads of information too! And yes, that’s my car now!

it’s also a lot of fun, and it feels so good to get around on something that’s SO much better for the environment.

maintaining diesel on vege oil

I am fairly certain that the most labor intensive part of this project will be obtaining and cleaning up the used vegetable oil. The conversion can be expensive, but my neighbor is willing to do it for virtually nothing.
