weed my garden (read all 2 entries…)
overgrown

On my way back toward the house from the shed the other night I realized how bad the weeds have become in almost every one of my garden beds AND in the lawn. It’s so bad right now that for a brief moment I thought I might cry. I felt entirely defeated – this yard is beginning to look like the yard of an abandoned house!

But I didn’t cry. Instead I resolved to get out for at least 15 minutes an evening to pull weeds. The night before last, despite the steamy heat, Marty got out the lawn mower and I got out my gloves and spade and we spent about 45 minutes making our separate efforts to tidy the place up.

Having the grass freshly cut made a significant impact to the appearance of the yard on the whole, of course; while I worked hard and weeded quite a large area around the cannas and calla lilies, the difference was noticeable only to me, I’m sure.

I didn’t get out last night to continue, but I’m going to spend 15 minutes this morning. I have, in my head, sort of divided up the yard into smaller sections so as not to get overwhelmed again by how MUCH there is yet to do. I just have to pluck away at it, little by little. It’s surprising how much area I can cover in just 15 minutes, and I welcome the fresh air, exercise and time in the garden.

Apparently...

...you guys are too far north to have a ready group of illegal Mexicans to mow and trim your lawn.

Not so here. They show up every Tuesday and make all the lawns look lovely. I help them by sitting here at the computer bitching about the noise of their machines.

I love calla lilies in the springtime

It’s great exercise! Especially on the buttocks and thighs. I can barely move the next day…probably because I do everything all at once. I spent all last Saturday picking those damn helicopters out of everything. They really work their way into the plants and the cracks…it sucks! My neighbor didn’t do hers and since it’s been raining really hard the past few days, she now has little trees coming up everywhere.

my neighbour too!

Hundreds of ‘em… I occasionally find myself wanting to go pull all the wee maple seedlings out of his garden myself but then I look at the jungle I have to contend with on my own property and give my head a vigorous shake.

It's amazing

how quickly the weeds can take control. It’s been raining cats and dogs here so unless you want to take care of you yard in the rain you have to wait for the rain to stop. The sun finally came out today so hopefully it will hang around long enough that we will be doing some of the same this weekend because our yard looks about the same. :o)

I would have gone out tonight, but I’m battling a cold and need my rest. Soon enough though.

Good for you Rin! Sounds like you made a good bit of progress in your yard.

Get well Soon Nik

and then, happy weeding! :o)
