attract more bees to my yard (read all 2 entries…)
bzzz 18 months ago

I’ve had bees on the brain recently. So, I was considering trying to attract some more bees to the yard, other than the wood bees that delight in our roof. Today while playing outside with my nephew I noticed about 5 or 6 bees in the clover, and I’m pretty certain they’re honey bees. I don’t know if perhaps someone has a hive they’re keeping somewhere around here, or if they’re wild bees but I like the idea of making the yard more attractive for them and hopefully help out the hive, since I know a lot of colonies are struggling and dying out. I’m going to start by asking that at least one patch of clover not be cut down when the lawn is mowed and then I’ll start figuring out what kinds of plants might attract them.

This goal could be worded better, since I can’t make the bees come to my yard, but I’ll consider it as finished when I’ve done a few things to try and attract them.

bees!

I love bees. And I do worry about them a great deal.

me too

I’m reading a book about them called Sweetness and Light (which is really good) right now and they’re just incredible creatures.

Bees

We have lots of bees in our yard. I hear about how threatened bumbles are, for example, but we get bumbles all the time. Bees especially seem to like our lavender.

You can attract mason bees (which don’t sting) by hanging a mason bee house. If you google mason bee house, you’ll get everything from how to make your own, to places to order fancy ones.

thanks!

Very cool to know, thank you. I may plant some lavender. And the mason bee house sounds like a fun project.
