Quest for Folly is not an island...or a man.

Be my niece's trusted friend (read all 2 entries…)
How apropos... 18 months ago

as my niece was born just one week ago today. Diaper changes and burpings are friendly, right? We may have to wait for the more mature aspects of our friendship to develop, but it is never too early to start fostering this bond. I can’t wait. I plan on embracing the role of Spinster Aunt with fervor and aplomb.

Comments:

as she gets older you’ll be able to do more and more. The good stuff starts to come when they’re learning to walk and learning to talk.

Quest for Folly is not an island...or a man.

Absolutely

However, this is a nice time, too. Sure it’s mostly sleeping and eating, but I have no complaints. And I have to agree with you—I can’t wait for that time a couple months from now when her personality really starts to bloom. Fun, fun, fun.

You darling man...

I’m so glad to know that spinster-ish aunts can have a positive impact. Popular culture seems to paint such a dour picture of us. It’s fun to hear that I won’t have to blaze a completely untraveled trail. Kudos to your Aunt. And to you as an Uncle!

Spinster-ish

aunts:)

I’ve taken to describing myself as a silly old bachelor but that is because it’s a factual description.

As long as you’re keeping up your bluestocking aspirations we might allow you spinterish as well. It just seems such an unAmerican word somehow.

But I’m sure your neice will love her aunt.

Aspirations Intact

I’m as much a Bluestocking as ever—the thing I look forward to the most is sharing great literature with her. (Ok, maybe not the most, but it’s right up there just after hugs and kisses and health and happiness.) In fact, I’ve been harboring a secret fear…what if she turns out to be a non-reader! I’d still love her fiercely, but…yikes.

(And as for “spinster” being unAmerican, well, it’s safe to say that I don’t exactly have my finger on the pulse of what counts as American these days. This is a kooky nation and I love it, but I don’t like it all that much right now.)

I

think I meant old-fashioned rather than unAmerican. English even. George Orwell via John Major sort of thing.
