take up some sort of non-active hobby (read all 3 entries…)
this sounds wierd 18 months ago

most people really want to be more active. I am having a lot of changes and I need to be less active. I am not really excited about that, but I do need to find something that is not running/swimming/training that satisfies me.
I’ve tried Mosaic, cross stitch, without satisfaction. I do enjoy reading, but, I need to do something else. I might just get some crayons today and do a little bit of plain childish coloring.

You might go to a craft store...

and get some pastels (either chalk or oil) and try those. They’re more versatile than crayons…but crayons are a bit on the inexpensive side, so you could test drive drawing with those before making the investment in pastels.

Another idea…since you’re not an out-of-shape person. You could take up something like nature photography. You can’t run by stuff and be able to take cool pictures, so it would make you slow down…but you’d get to spend time outdoors doing a low-impact activity.

Those

are some really great ideas!

I really enjoy photography

but the doc sort of nixed that as an inactive pasttime…
I colored a little today. My lack of talent was there, but it was fun.
I’m either going to have to go to the library or something soon…

Well...

if you think you’d enjoy art, and drawing doesn’t seem like it’ll do it for you, you could try sculpture. If you wanted to “test drive” that, you could buy some play-dough first. I’ll keep on trying to come up with some ideas in the mean time.

and your photographs are exceptional

The color and composition of that sunset … ahhhh!

why don't you

take up your cello and find some chamber music partners?

Boy RP

that actually sounds like a lot fo fun. My fingers are not really upto it after the break, but I am thinking that this is giving me some ideas….I miss being around creative people!

Adar is back.

I was a potter...

and can recommend it, if you can find somewhere with the equipment to take some lessons.

The beauty of clay, for me, was that it was totally recyclable. All “failures” disappeared into the slurry bucket, to re-emerge as new clay to make new messes, er, pottery.

Wheel throwing takes strength, so it has a physical component, but you do it sitting down.

My next project is to learn papermaking, which looks like a likely art form for me because I LOVE playing in messes.

I so want to do this

In my imagination are those orchid pots with holes in the sides and bottoms, funky shapes and earthy glazes…

Paper making is

super fun but can be quite wet. I took a paper making class one summer as part of my MFA coursework. We had to try out another art form. But I tell you, it felt like for 6 weeks my feet were constantly wet. Wear old shoes you don’t care about. You also spend a lot of time obsessing about collecting stuff with lots of fiber in it to boil down into your pulp.

Pastels!

You can buy these soft chalks and use a sketch book. Chalk is forgiving: you can “erase” a lot of mistakes, give your work a soft look, and you may find you really enjoy coloring with these. You can use a photo as inspiration or do a still life from objects in your home.

Of course, I agree with Adar that pottery is just the best but I wouldn’t call it inactive!

Didn’t you once say you wanted to try Quilting?

how about surfing and blogging? Are they considered active or non-active? If they’re active I can totally reassess my sedentary lifestyle in a more positive light…

Bill is living large in Washington DC oh, hi. Did you miss me?

whatever you do...

avoid YouTube. I’m at nearly 300 videos posted, and I am a ‘stats junkie’... in that I look at how many people have viewed them each day.

But, it can be done without a lot of physical effort.

astronomy?

Have you done any stargazing? I took an astronomy class in college and used to spend evenings finding the constellations and starts we’d heard about in that evening’s lecture.

Sessygail is regaining some balance.

My suggestion: Fold 1000 paper cranes

I saw it as a goal out here (and I had heard about it before that) and decided to try it. It has been a couple of weeks now since I bought the origami paper to do it and I have yet to fold a crane successfully.

I love your coloring idea…have you tried a “scribble picture” yet? :)
