3. The russian revolution and Stalin

- The Revolution happened in October 1917, when the Bolsheviks headed by Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin seized control.
- The Revolution toppled the Romanov dynasty, the current ruler of which had been Tsar Nicholas II. The Russian royal family were all shot in a basement of their palace.
- The Tsarist secret police, the Okhrana, kept a close watch on the revolutionaries and arrested many of them. Some of them (including Stalin) were deported to Siberia in punishment for their plotting (before the Revolution).
