And have been sleeping on the bed for about three years now (and have moved twice with it). At one point, I took it apart and made it taller for better storage room.
All you really need for it is a circ. saw (though a chop saw is way easier if you can get use of one) and a drill. It’s completely doable for someone who’s not really a carpenter (my skills are really basic).
I don’t know what kinds of plans you’re working from, but if you want talk more about it, I’d be happy to share more about how I made mine.

I don’t expect it to be too difficult… I’m reasonably handy when it comes to this sort of thing. (Usually.) The biggest problem is the planning: I have a drill, but no saw, so any cuts will have to be made at the store. I have to be really sure of what I want – I’m not going to get any second chances. (I’m also in a thin-walled apartment building, so renting a saw probably isn’t a good idea.)
I just couldn’t stomach putting up a couple hundred dollars for something I knew I could make for less than one hundred. You are right, get as much cut as possible at the store. I don’t know where you are with this, but don’t be intimidated. I put mine together in about 3 hours after months of planning and fretting, and we are using it today. Mine probably won’t survive a move, but now I know how to build another one even better. It was well worth the effort.
I was actually all ready to do this toward the end of last year. But then I moved, and my bedroom is significantly smaller than it used to be. So now I’m trying to decide whether I still want to make something, and if I do, whether I want to go for the design I whipped up earlier, or downsize.
