A while back, I came to a realization about working. After fighting myself about my feelings about being gainfully employed, I decided to look at working like this:
Nobody likes their job. It’s called “going to work” for a reason. It’s not supposed to be fun. You’re not supposed to love it. If you loved doing your job and you would do it for free anyway, then you wouldn’t be paid for it. So, stop whining and go to work.
I lived by this way of thinking through my last ultra-crappy job and I’m starting to adopt that feeling toward my current job. But, here’s the thing… that’s not good enough.
Just going to work to get a paycheck is not good enough for me. Just going to work to have another notch on your résumé so you can get a better job later is not good enough. Going to your office, sitting down and doing your job because you have to, not because you want to is just. Not. Good enough.
So, one of the things I want to do is find a job that I love… and I have a feeling the only way that’s going to happen while I’m young enough to enjoy it is to create my own job (See: “Start a magazine” entry on my list of things).
