become more cultured
How??

It really is hard going about this for the simple reason that it means ripping up your comfort zone. Moreover, it also means doing some things that appear hypocritical, snobbish, “fake”, etc. But if you sincerely think what you will do/ are already doing will actually help you to be: more respectful, more polite, more clear and transparent (and therefore more approachable)... hey what are you waiting for? Go for it!

It’s actually more than just books to me. This is a very challenging goal and to just focus on the intellectual/ fashionable stuff might lead to a temporary effect.

...So how do we go about being cultured permanently?

Hey, if you dont message/ comment on this, you wont know!

I totally see where you’re going with this goal and it’s clear that this goal has a deeper meaning to you than others aiming for it.

You pose a great question: how to stay permanently cultured? I don’t really have an answer for it, but I guess for me it’d be about constantly attending events and keeping up with new ‘cultural’ publications. There’s no way we’d be able to attend an opera once and milk it for the rest of our ‘cultured’ existence…

I think being cultured

means you have a taste for the high brow. It doesn’t mean you have to keep up with trends or even attend operas or whatever. It’s being capable of appreciating more intellectual things, instead of writing them off as stuffy or boring.

Once you develop that taste, you will seek out things that are more cultured, because the vulgar things will be a turn-off. High culture is like rich food; a little goes a long way. Whereas low culture, like junk food, is addictive with no value, so you consume a lot more.

I also think that kindness and compassion are important to avoid elitism & snobbery. A sense of humor is key as well, because then you can even enjoy elements of lower culture for what it is.

Being cultured doesn’t mean having money either, or being upper class. My family is working, lower middle class & all very cultured. I was raised to love art, music, literature & have manners that are out of consideration (not reflex). My mom says we have “champagne taste on a beer budget”, and no one ever realized we were poor as we were :D

Hi! This is all really some great going.

“champagne taste on a beer budget” : I like that, lol. I hope you dont mind if I lift that phrase and use it. I know a situation where that idea is going to go a long way; please see “Intellectual Conversation- goal” for more details. ;-)

Precisely!

Gib_I,

... and cant add anything more!
