sell a screenplay
Just Getting Started 17 months ago

My goal for this summer was to write a screnplay. A GOOD screenplay. I’d already written 2 (and a half) so I started my third at the end of May. I just finished it last week and I’m really excited about it! It turned out a lot better than I thought it would.

I’ve got my query letter written, my logline refined, and a list of agencies to send the query letter to. The only problem is that I’m sixteen… I mean, I guess that would be a problem. I don’t really know. My hope is that if I’m as professional as possible, people will take me seriously. Wish me luck!

Inspiration

G’day maya_papaya

I’m even worse off… I’m only 14!!! I am halfway through writing a screenplay, and I was about to give up, thinking “Oh, who’d buy a screenplay from a 14 year old boy?” then I saw your entry and saw that you are only a few years older than me… and still got everything ready to sell it. You are an inspiration to me and now I am writing again! thank you so much.

Anyway, I wish you all the best in selling your screenplay, infact, I hope it becomes a block buster and makes a fortune and you get rich and win an oscar, all before you turn 17. how cool would that be?

Cheers!
Dylan

:D

Aww wow you’ve inspired me by saying I inspire you! Haha. I haven’t exactly found success so far but I’ve sent the letter to a couple agencies already. I even got a few rejection letters! And trust me, that’s a good thing.

The best advice I could give to you that I’ve gotten so far is to just keep writing! I mean, it makes sense. If you want to be a writer, you write. Apparently most screenwriters don’t find success until their 9th screenplay (yikes), so just keep them coming. If you need any help I’m soo willing to help you out with any questions you have because I know I wish someone would help me! Good luck.

PS. Thanks for all the good vibes with winning an Oscar and stuff haha. Thinking positively does work ;)

Thanks for the Tips!

Thanks so much for your suggestions! Luckily, I think I’m on the right track.

My screenplay is 112 pages (check!), and I’ve already registered with both WGA and gotten a Copyright (check!).

I’ve mostly been focusing on finding an agent, but my lack of success, and your suggestions, probably mean I should find a manager instead… I’ve actually already visited both of those sites before but being management instead of agencies, I didn’t pay much attention to them. Have you had experience with either? Any other management companies you could refer me to would help also!

And thanks so much for the encouragement for us ‘young ‘uns’. The way I see it, the earlier I get started, the faster I’ll find success!

Wow, thanks for all your help. I can see I have quite a search ahead of me. And yes, I’ve got my logline refined and I’m working on my synopsis right now!
