write a short story. (read all 2 entries…)

Hmmm...  — 1 month ago

Egh. I’ve got an idea, but it looks more like a novella than a short story from the plots I’ve got lain out. This is going to be difficult. I think I need a totally different plot idea, but maybe I can condense parts of this one and use it. What do you all plot around- the message you want to get across, some characters, a question you have (such as what is the answer to this or what would happen if…basically an event or possibility) or what? Do you even plot ahead of time or let the plot unfold as you write?

Have you tried Fast Fiction?

The basic concept is take a blank piece of paper, and just start writing…for only five minutes. Sometimes you can get a complete story, sometimes you end up with the outline for one.

There are books on Fast Fiction and 5 Minute Fiction, although I completely described the bare core of this technique, in the paragraph above. There are also published books of Sudden Fiction which are very short stories that have been written.

I guess what I’m saying is that one approach is not to think so much about it, and just take a stab at it.

Most of all, have fun!
