Philosophy  — 1 month ago

Okay, you know them all. From Socrate to Jean-Paul Sartre.

Do you have a favourite philosopher, and/or a favourite philosophical theory?

Comments:

tangerine_now would just like a first chance if that's not too much to ask

Whoa

I kinda like the Tao outlook on life. But I admit I don’t know about philosophy enough to choose a favourite. I know I don’t like Kierkegaard; he makes me want to stop breathing immediately and wait for the darkness to engulf me.

I’m surprised I’m the first comment…

Do I know them all?

Not really. I like the Tao philosophies, too. But I really don’t have much knowledge of philosophy outside of a logic course I took in college.

*Mama Bear* is self-medicating... no pun intended.

I used to be...

...quite wild with Kant & Spinoza… but I can’t quite remember why though :p

This will sound a bit repetitive, but I’m also pretty wild about Lao Tzu. And the Tibetan buddhist philosophy (it’s not a religion to me).

Socrates was also quite amazing…

Hmmm… It’s way too long since I’ve had time to indulge in reading my philosophy collection… I have quite a few unread ones on my shelves :S

To anyone out there interested in philosophy, and feeling like you don’t know the basics, I’d very strongly recommend reading this book.

La Parisienne is back

Nietzsche totally blows my mind each time.

Ecce Homo is a good place to start, actually it’s one of his last books. It’s a small book and it’s made of small sections, which makes it easy to read on and on/off basis (this does not happen all that often when it comes down to intellectual literature so it’s worth noting).

It’s not a auto-biography but he sort of goes through his works and what each book meant to him and so forth. So it’s an easy read, and an excellent intro to his oeuvre, also shedding light on several key concepts of his.

After reading this book you can either leave it at that if it’s not your thing and the book will probably have done a better intro job than any of the ‘companion’ books around (these are probably longer and more difficult to read anyway!). Or you can read more, if you’re keen, and in this case this book will really help you know which of his books you’re interested in.

bjuwm feelin' good...

Just an opinion...

I hate philosophy. I took a class and had such a bad teacher that I’ve become very close minded to any of it.

Perhaps I’d be willing to learn someday but I’m still pissed at that instructor after 8 years!

He tried to change my relious beliefs and I took great offense to that

jess jess jess misses her dog.

can't think of a favorite

my boyfriend is finishing a degree in philosophy, so i get quite exhausted with talk of philosophers.

dont get me wrong, i think its fascinating…my minor in college was religious studies…and i ended up taking a LOT of philosophy for that.

but its been a while since ive read any…and i get tired of the beau getting philosophical on me. :)

I’m ignorant in philosophy, but I appreciate it a lot. I have a lot of desire to learn more about it and when I have the time I’ll :)

anyway, I like existentialism.

This quote came to mind...

“To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts; but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates.”
—Henry David Thoreau

I love Henry David Thoreau.

Thoreau is great

Actually the word philosophy comes from the Greek words Philo and Sophia; which mean lover and wise, therefore Philosophy is the love of wisdom.

There's a lot of good philosophers.

I liked what St.Augustine had to say about what was eternal and what was temporal.
