Worth it, with caveats
First off, for anyone in Southern California, Coachella is a fantastic opportunity to see great bands. 2005’s lineup is no exception, and you’ll probably have difficulty deciding between Saturday and Sunday. If you have the luxury of staying overnight (note that “luxury” and “overnight” at music festivals tend to be mutually exclusive), then congratulations! I’ve gone twice before but only for one day each time.
Things to be aware of:
- Long lines from the freeway to the polo grounds. I’ve spent well over an hour just waiting to get to park. Bring friends to pass the time quicker.
- Long line to get in (entrepreneurs bring bottles of water to sell to everyone waiting outside). Start at the front and look for people you know who would let you cut in line!
- Many bands, many stages. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the schedule and make some tactical decisions about who you’re realistically going to be able to see. There will be conflicts. If dozens of bands play on one day, you’ll be luck to see about 8 or 9.
- It’s hot. Damn hot.
- It can get chilly after the sun goes down. Bring a light jacket or hoodie or whatever you kids wear these days.
- Try to make note of where you parked. My girlfriend and I spent a half hour wandering the very dark parking lot afterward pressing the alarm button on my keyless remote, trying to locate my car.
- Have a good attitude! There’s going to be lots of kids on drugs bouncing around, thinking this is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to them. Don’t bring them down!
I’ve had an amazing time both years I’ve gone. Enjoy!!
