Zoë was definitely born a generation too late

read a book in German (Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen OR Herr der Diebe)
Untitled 17 months ago

good idea! I have taken german in school (first compulsory, now by choice) for 5 years now, and I’ve had to read 2 novels – “wer kommt das saltz im see” & “Der Verwandlung” by Franz Kafka (along with some of his short stories). It wasn’t easy – especially since it’s all expressionism and surrealism and rather old style…
so, I think HP is going to be a very good idea; it was the first book (of over a 100 pages) I read in English, only fair it should be the first one in German as well :)

ofcourse I don't mind!

That’s what the link’s for…
Yes, I’m from the Netherlands (45 minute drive to the german border, I’m guessing).

and… thank you! it’s a great compliment. Dutch is my first language, English second.
I guess it just developped rather easily because as a child I always liked the bbc way better than most dutch channels (apparently bodger & badger is eductive after all! imagine that…) And apart from that, I read a lot of english; it’s given me a much bigger vocab-range.
It’s really the same thing as this challenge’s purpose… familiarity helps you learn.

mousey..

..yes, the partner in mashed potato-crime :)

I don’t know much about the british schoolsystem, but from what I understand we have it pretty good over here (in the netherlands). Pretty much everyone speaks english, since it’s compulsory in high school, and next to that even at the lowest level of schooling eeryone has a minimum of 3 years french and 2 years german (over a course of 4 years after primary school). any extra languages you might take really depend on the school you choose.

I considered going to an international school after primary school, but they were incredibly uptight with VERY high standards. and when my friend didn’t get in, I skipped my interview and decided on another school.

funny

Harry Potter 1-4 I read in German because it is my mother tongue. Harry Potter 5 was the first book I read in English to learn more of it.
It’s funny that people make it the other way round^^
Children’s books are great to read them in a different language because it is not so difficult and just makes fun
But why don’t read a book that is originally German like Der Herr Der Diebe or Die Unendliche Geschichte?

I’m planning on reading more original german work as well, also because I have to next year (for school). But I think at the moment it’ll help me more to read a book I already know really well – it’s a bit like watching the lord of the rings movies in german; I know the script in english so well that I can reference it to what I’m hearing in german. make any sence?

sure it does (:
keep on reading^^

hi

terrible, to be perfectly honest…
they don’t even have it in the library over here! I’ll have to order it after all.
not that I have time to read; I’m in my final year now, and my attitude towards exams is crappy to say the least… so I spend all day learning or sitting around, think about how much I hate doing schoolwork :) (very productive, indeed)

Around April I have to take literature courses, so I’ll at least be reading some German then…. I doubt Harry Potter is allowed though (shame, shame)

Zoë has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
