I know it’s possible, but I’ve never had great success in losing weight. I’ve joined some online groups in the past, and been incredibly discouraged when everyone else seems to report the weight simply melting off, and I’m the one who loses maybe a pound or two. Very discouraging. I’m not at my very tippy-top weight any more - about ten pounds below it - and need to lose 50 pounds to get into the very top of the “normal” range for my height and build. I detest “fad diets” and think the common sense way - eat less, exercise more - is the way to go. Not glamorous, not sexy, not publication-worthy, but probably more effective in the long run.
Gotta start somewhere

good books to read
I found good information about what’s going on with dieting in these three books:
Heavin, Gary. Curves : permanent results without permanent dieting. New York: GP Putnam’s Sons, 2003.
Haas, Elias. The False Fat Diet: The Revolutionary 21 Day Program for Losing the Weight You Think Is Fat. New York: Ballentine Books, 2000.
Schwartz, Erika. The 30-day natural hormone plan : look and feel young again without synthetic HRT. 2004.
