Is part of the Axe Historique (Historic Axis) which is a line of historical monuments in Paris.

Inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome and is currently the second largest triumphal arch in the world.

It was built to commemorate those who fought in the wars, mostly the Napoleonic Wars.

Below the Arc is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which is representative of everyone who died and could not be identified. It has an eternal flame which was the first eternal flame to be lit in Europe since 390.
