sort out my damn stuff! (read all 10 entries…)

Progress  — 4 weeks ago

I’ve been forgetting to post all the little bits & pieces I’ve been doing, but it’s even nicer to be able to write one post reporting some actual progress that’s come of all those baby steps!

I’ve finally – gasp! – actually finished one particular area. Well, sort of. All the little random boxes and bags of toiletries – by which I mean not just bathroom stuff but also make-up, jewellery, hair stuff, manicure stuff, etc etc (did I recently say I didn’t go in for that kind of girly stuff? I seem to have a lot of toiletries :-p ) – are all unpacked and sorted. I threw out a lot of things, put together a bag for the bring bank in work, and piled everything I want to keep into one drawer. That drawer still needs further sorting, but at least everything is finally in one place.

Of the four big boxes that were at the end of the sofa, three are unpacked and the fourth – I think – is stuff I had put aside to donate in some long-ago decluttering bid, so it’ll need only the most cursory going-through and can go straight into the current donation bags. I came across a couple of treasures, wound up with two small boxes for ebaying/donation and a couple things for storage, and the rest got trashed.

Finally got the beanbag all the way to Little Bro, too. I’d brought it out to my mom’s – who lives close by him – a few weeks ago, but it needed de-cat-haired and a small hole in the cover stitched; I did that yesterday and brought it over.

Sigh… that all felt like great progress to me, but now that I see it written down it doesn’t actually look like that much. Still, it’s the furthest I’ve gotten for at least a year and a half, and more than I felt capable of ever doing not so many months ago. So I think it’s worth being proud of. :o)

Thanks :o)

I actually kinda am!

Shoe boxes!

gesundheit

I bought about 6-7 of those plastic, snap-lid shoe boxes for organizing the stuff in my bathroom. They fit under my sink.

1. Topical medications & bandages
2. Internal medications (pills, syrups, etc.)
3 & 4. (Men, cover your ears if you are going to be babies about this) Feminine hygiene products.
5. Manicure/pedicure stuff, extra cotton pads and Q-tips, stuff like that. (Though the idea of me having a manicure that lasts more than 5 minutes is a joke…)
6. Travel-sized toiletries
7. Surplus toiletries (like if I buy a 2-pack of contact lens solution, toothbrushes, or whatever).

Then I have one little basket under there, too, with the stuff I use every morning – lotion, face wash, mouth wash, all that.

You’re doing great! Keep it going! It will feel so good when you’re done!

What a great idea.

The space under my bathroom vanity could use a bit of reorganization, and a bunch of those see-through shoeboxes would be ideal. Much better than the enormous opaque buckets I’m using now.

The basket idea is brilliant, too. I’ve done that with one of the baskets that live in the mini-shelving unit next to the vanity.

That's a great idea.

I’ve got a hanging shelf/basket type thing in the bathroom for every-day stuff, but a few small boxes or trays that would fit into that drawer would be a great way to keep it organised.

On a slight tangent, I had to smile at the thought of having two boxes for feminine hygiene stuff – I used to struggle to find storage space for all my variety of products as well, but since I switched to using a Mooncup, it’s pretty much all I need, and takes up hardly any space at all. (I’m not being paid to plug the thing, honest – it’s just brilliant :o) )

I've *wondered* about those things!

I haven’t seen that particular brand, but something similar. No weird nonsense when it’s time to empty it? Easy to use at work? No ill health effects?

I am very interested in this!!

Oops, I thought I'd already answered this - sorry!

Mooncups are absolutely fantastic – I’ve been using mine almost two years now, and have never looked back. (My entries on researching, buying and trying it are here)

Once you get the hang of it, emptying it is easy. It might take a couple tries to find the best technique for you, but stick with it – it’s effortless once you get used to it. Work’s no problem either – if you can’t wash it because the sinks are communal, you just take a paper towel in the stall with you. Plus it means you don’t have to worry about taking enough tampons/pads to work with you or carrying them to the bathroom.

And far from ill health effects, it’s actually much better for you than tampons – tampons dry you out, which leaves you more vulnerable to infection. I also found that it seems to reduce cramping – I thought I must be imagining it, but other people have said the same too.

I hope you give it a try – I can’t recommend it highly enough :o)

Seconding Eve on the Mooncup.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. I’d never go back, and when I have a daughter I’ll be putting her straight onto it – none of those polluting, drying, costly tampons and pads for my little girl.

That's significant progress!

Three out of four big boxes unpacked!

Toiletries unpacked, sorted, and consolidated into a single drawer!

Beanbag chair de-furred, repaired, and donated to Little Bro!

On what planet does that “[not] actually look like much”?

You’re starting to sound like Abs in her I’m-such-a-slacker mode.

You're right.

I think the reason it doesn’t feel like much in one way is cos I’m thinking of the physical effort involved, which isn’t anything major, and thinking I should have been able to do all that in an afternoon rather than nearly three weeks. But the mental/emotional effort is much greater, so yeah, I guess it is significant :o)

Hey!

I heard that!

Not meaning to argue with your feelings,

…that all felt like great progress to me, but now that I see it written down it doesn’t actually look like that much.

but it seems like an awful lot to me. Well done, sweetie!

Thanks, love.

Cue frantic tidying this evening so it actually looks like I’ve made some progress tomorrow! :-p

No frantic tidying allowed.

Leave things as they are, see if I can spot what’s changed since last time.

I know it’s hard to see it as progress when you’re right there in it. Try to step back and remember the way it was before you started.

I’ve been trying to get rid of clutter for a while and I know I’ve gotten rid of alot but it still seems like there is so much more to go. It helps to think of the progress. Sometimes I think I should take a photo so I can look back and actually see how far I’ve come.

evenstar42 has gotten 9 cheers on this entry.
