Worth doing!

550 miles  — 1 month ago

Riding home in the sunshine, just turned the corner to start mounting the hill, when

crunch

and the shifter stopped working.

I rode down to the bike shop (a mostly level ride back to Marymoor Park, and then on the trail on up), where they found that the cable was broken somewhere deep in the housing. No chance of just fishing it out, replacing it, and letting me go on my way. Since they have a lot of bikes to work on, they’ll deal with it some time tomorrow. So the bike’s in the shop overnight, and they’ll call me about when I can pick it up tomorrow.

Jim Carson Counting down the days to cycle oregon...

okay, this is too weird...

Our bikes’ maintenance gremlins are in cahoots. I break a wheel (sorta, I swapped out a crappy one for the worn down one), then you hear a bang . On our ride near Snohomish, your tire’s side casing splits, then the very next week, mine does. Monday morning my shifter cable snaps as I’m at “maximum warp speed” down Honda Hill. And yours does today.

I picked up a cable at Gregg’s and wired it to be a three speed. When I got home, I fished out the old cable bits with a knitting needle and rewired it. And since I was at it, I did new casing, too. It’s soooooo much smoother.
