Got the class info, but it's pricey! 16 months ago

American Swedish Institute Swedish Language Classes

I got the class info, only now I need to think about if I will spend the money on a class at this time. It costs $110 for nine weeks plus an initial investment of $72 for a text (you use it through about four levels).

It’s so hard when goals contradict each other . . . for example, to take and spend $200 on a language class is not fulfilling my goal of working on my snowball with gazelle intensity. It’s this kind of constant reprioritizing that has up until now kept me from meeting my now #1 goal of “get out of debt.”

Luckily, I have a few weeks to mull it over. I can also keep my eyes open for a Community Education class. Unfortunately, classes at the U of M meet too often for my work life.

contradicting goals

I hate when this happens! Today I stopped at a local bakery to pick up buns and bread because that’s all I needed, and I thought that would be faster than going to the grocery store. But of course, all the bread there has enriched and bleached flour (I try to only buy bread with whole wheat flour that hasn’t been blasted apart and then re-fortified). So which is more important…supporting this great little local business (the buns are at least made in house) or eating bread with less processed ingredients?

I think I’ve decided that even the “better” bread I buy at the grocery store can’t be that good for me, because it all has a million ingredients and has been shipped from who knows where…so unless I’m making my own, I think I might as well support the local place. BUt it’s not always easy to know which one is the one that should win out…

Another Idea

If you’re willing to take time doing this, you may want to advertise on Craiglists or through friends to find a Scan Studies grad student who is teaching Swedish. They’ll almost certainly be cheaper.

I had a friend who did this while he was working for the Philadelphia Swedish Institute.

I’d offer to give you lessons but my Swedish is very, very rusty.

Lycka till! (good luck)
